Spin-charge separation of plasmonic excitations in thin topological insulators

چکیده
We discuss plasmonic excitations in a thin slab of topological insulators. In the limit of no hybridization of the surface states and same electronic density of the two layers, the electrostatic coupling between the top and bottom layers leads to optical and acoustic plasmons which are purely charge and spin collective oscillations. We then argue that a recent experiment on the plasmonic excitations of Bi2Se3 [Di Pietro et al., Nat. Nanotechnol. 8, 556 (2013)] must be explained by including the charge response of the two-dimensional electron gas of the depletion layer underneath the two surfaces. We also present an analytic formula to fit their data.

Spin polarization and transport of surface states in the topological insulators Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3 from first principles.
We investigate the band dispersion and the spin texture of topologically protected surface states in the bulk topological insulators Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3 by first-principles methods. Strong spin-orbit entanglement in these materials reduces the spin polarization of the surface states to ∼50% in both cases; this reduction is absent in simple models but of important implications to essentially any s...

In this work we investigate charge transport in one-dimensional (1D) insulators via semi-classical and perturbative renormalization group (RG) methods. We consider the problem of electron-electron, electron-phonon and electrontwo-level system interactions. We show that non-linear collective modes such as polarons and solitons are reponsible for transport. We find a new excitation in the Mott in...

I discuss origin and possible experimental manifestations of charge-spin separation in 1D Luttinger and Luther-Emery liquids, the latter describing 1D Mott and Peierls insu-lators and superconductors. Emphasis is on photoemission where the spectral function generically shows two dispersing peaks associated with the collective charge and spin excitations, and on transport. I analyse the temperat...

Topological insulators represent a new class of quantum phase defined by invariant symmetries and spin-orbit coupling that guarantees metallic Dirac excitations at its surface. The discoveries of these states have sparked the hope of realizing non-trivial excitations and novel effects such as a magnetoelectric effect and topological Majorana excitations. Here we develop a theoretical formalism ...

Three-dimensional topological crystalline insulators were recently predicted and observed in the SnTe class of IV-VI semiconductors, which host metallic surface states protected by crystal symmetries. In this work, we study thin films of these materials and expose their potential for device applications. We demonstrate that thin films of SnTe and Pb(1-x)Sn(x)Se(Te) grown along the (001) directi...
